“HOW YOU DOING?” MIGUEL’S voice echoed off the tile of the bathroom. Tabitha winced, sighing.

“Not great. My head is killing me.” She stood, groaning much louder than Miguel as he stood. “I need a horse tranq and a big glass of wine. Or some fucking coffee.”

“You and me both.” He opened the bathroom door. Morning light streamed in, and Tabitha felt a pull in her left hip. She hissed in pain. Miguel looked back at her.

“Jeez, dude, you okay?”

“Yep,” she groaned. “Just my whole left side has apparently decided to betray me. First the hand, then the shot, now my hip. Ow.” She tried to stretch it out. “Oh, fuck.” She limped to the door. Miguel held it open for her until she was out. It was bright outside, with no rain. Tabitha hoped their luck would hold out. She was feeling a little defeated, but spiteful. No way would she let whatever had happened last night affect her.

She walked out with Miguel, walkie talkie in hand. Farrah laid in the sun, and Tabitha sat against the wall. Miguel moved off to the side and relieved himself, and Tabitha turned her head slightly away to give him privacy. She turned on the walkie talkie.

“Charlie? Over.”

Silence for a moment. Then, Charlie’s voice crackled to life.

“Tabs? You survive the night?”

“Barely,” she rolled her eyes. “I had a... I had a weird... something.”

“What happened?”

“Well, I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, there was a guy outside the store window, staring at me. He... looked like the man I shot the other night.”

“You shot someone? Jesus, Tabitha!”

“I’m fine, thanks for asking, Charlie,” she huffed.

“Sorry. Was that all he did? Stare?”

“He slammed his fists on the door and tried to get me to open it. I think that they can only be let in if invited.” She stood and began walking around, idly looking at the ground. Miguel sat with Farrah, sighing as he looked at the clear sky. “Miguel thinks it was anxiety meds I took.”

“Anxiety? Tabs, you remember when you had a reaction to those other meds?”

“Shush.” Miguel didn’t need to know what Charlie was going to say. It would add fuel to the fire. “Maybe he’s right. Maybe I was dreaming.” She wasn’t quite convinced. Miguel looked over at her with a comforting smile. She gave him a small, brief smile in return. “I think, maybe, once we get into town, we’ll be fine. We should reach it before the end of today, since it’s not raining. Which reminds me, we need to get going. We’re going to stock up on supplies, then I’ll call you when we get to the radio station.”

“Alright, good. Later, Tabs.”

“Later.” She turned the walkie off. Miguel looked over at her, leaning back on his hands lazily.

“What’s that about anxiety meds?” His brows rose once, mockingly. Tabitha rolled her eyes.

“Nothing. Come on, we need to get restocked so we can get going.”

“Uh huh... .” He made kissy noises at Farrah, who stayed where she was.
